WASHINGTON, DC—House Democrats announced the chamber would vote on a resolution to impeach the President on Thursday. This stunning reversal comes after weeks of criticism from House Republicans, concerned about the transparency and neutrality of the impeachment proceedings, which have been carried out in secret for weeks under the direction of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff.
Congressman Warren Davidson said of the decision to vote:
"House Democrats don’t have sufficient evidence of an impeachable offense (high crimes and misdemeanors). They want to launch a formal impeachment inquiry, but most members haven’t even been permitted to see a single transcript or question a single witness. Moreover, they have not defined the scope—listing charge(s) or naming the accuser(s).
"Instead, Democrats have carefully constructed a narrative and supported it with selective leaks to make everything look as bad as possible for the President. I’m glad that Speaker Pelosi has finally decided to hold a vote in keeping with precedent, but it means little after weeks of secret meetings and closed-door hearings. You can’t pretend to uphold due process halfway through an investigation."
