WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Senate Democrats voted against closing debate on S. 311, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, thereby preventing this life-saving measure from passing the Senate.

The bill, introduced by Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE), is cosponsored by 50 senators, and it would require doctors to provide routine medical care to infants in the event they are born alive after an abortion. Currently, 33 states have such protections in place for infants in the event of a failed abortion.

Congressman Warren Davidson (R-OH), who is an original cosponsor of the companion bill in the House, offered the following remarks after the vote:

“I am saddened that Senate Democrats blocked this measure, which enjoys the support of a majority in the Senate. As an original cosponsor of the House companion bill, I pray that we will find a way to protect the lives of infants who may be unwanted by their parents. It is also my fervent hope that we will be able to take up this legislation in the House. Contrary to the rhetoric, this legislation isn’t about abortion—it’s about infanticide. Every newborn should receive adequate medical care regardless of how they enter this world.”
