WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today the House of Representatives voted 224-194 to pass a war powers resolution condemning the January 2 airstrike authorized by President Trump that that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.

Congressman Warren Davidson (R-OH), a longtime critic of prolonged, ill-defined U.S. military activity in the Middle East, praised the president’s defensive action last week, which prevented imminent attacks on Americans.

Rep. Davidson voted against today’s measure citing the reactionary nature of the resolution, which also fails to address enduring problems with the United States’ Middle East policy.

I agree with President Trump’s decision to eliminate known terrorists conspiring with and enabling our enemies to attack and kill Americans. Not only was it morally just, it was lawful and Constitutional. In this case, decisive action was appropriate and timely.

I would welcome Congress reclaiming more of its war-making authority by repealing the vague, two-decade old authorizations for use of force and replacing them as needed with specific, mission-oriented directives. However, the Democrat’s resolution is purely partisan politics and not relevant to the broader authorization for use of military force.

Worse, in the midst of conflict with Iran, Speaker Pelosi is bringing a resolution essentially listing all of the things President Trump
cannot do to Iran.
