WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Warren Davidson (OH-08) testified before the House Committee on the Budget concerning his bill, H.R. 3822, the CBO Show Your Work Act, legislation which requires the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to disclose information about how it scores tax legislation. Davidson was invited to discuss his bill and explain how it would impose greater transparency at the CBO and help lawmakers make better policy decisions.
"Given the enormous weight CBO scores have on the ability of lawmakers to make policy decisions, it should be a top priority that CBO standards and scores be transparent, accurate, and of the highest possible quality," said Davidson. "Requiring the CBO to release how it scores legislation for informational purposes can help Members of Congress fairly judge these bills effectively, and accurately model alternative courses of action when necessary."
Davidson's bill requires the CBO publish its data online in an easy to understand format. The recent high profile debates on healthcare and tax reform highlight the need for more transparency in understanding the CBO's methodology. Davidson introduced H.R. 3822 in September of 2017. The bill has 16 co-sponsors and was referred to the House Committee on the Budget.
